DMV and DEC warn motorists to watch for deer and moose on or near roadways

Dear Neighbors,
Here is an important advisory re-printed from the DMV website.  Please take care on our roads during this season!

Moose in the road

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and DEC are reminding drivers that deer and moose become more active and are more likely to enter public roadways in the fall.

During the months of October, November, and December, it is breeding season and the animals are more visible. Two-thirds of the crashes between deer and vehicles occur during this three-month span. Motorists should also be alert for moose on roadways in the Adirondacks and surrounding areas this time of year.

Motorists should be aware animals are especially active at dawn and dusk when visibility may be reduced and commuter traffic may be heavy. DEC recommends these precautions motorists can take to reduce the chance of hitting a deer or moose:

  • Decrease speed when you approach deer near roadsides. Deer can “bolt” or change direction at the last minute.
  • If you see a deer go across the road, decrease speed and be careful. Deer travel in groups so expect other deer to follow.
  • Use emergency lights or a headlight signal to warn other drivers when deer are seen on or near the road.
  • Use caution on roadways marked with deer crossing signs.
  • Use extreme caution when driving at dawn or dusk, when animal movement is at its highest and visibility is reduced.

Success!

Greetings neighbors —

Check your mailboxes! This afternoon I opened my mine to find a letter from the Highway Dept. letting me know that Intervale Rd. will be resurfaced this season.  I hope you all receive similar letters, and that all the roads in our community in need of attention are scheduled to receive it this year.

Many thanks to those who participated in our Road Call initiative.  Working together we can achieve wonderful things for Old Field South!

Thanks

Thanks to all those who contacted Brookhaven Town today. Hopefully, our collective effort will make a difference. Quite a few comments have been posted to “Road Call.” One resident spoke to a town road crew and got some interesting information that he has posted as a comment. To read these comments click on the “bubble” to the right of the posting.

Hope to see you at the business meeting on Tuesday.

Road Call

Call to Action

Please call Brookhaven Town tomorrow, Friday, between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to request that Old Field South’s damaged roads be resurfaced.  In addition, if you are aware of drainage issues, please request that the town address those as well.  Here are specific instructions on how to make your request:

Call 451-9200 between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.  You will be connected with the call center.
Select 2 for residence services.
Tell the service center employee that you are requesting road resurfacing.  She/he will ask the name of the roads.  Provide at least 2 street names.
After your request is logged, ask for the request number.

After doing so, please return to to this posting and use the comments feature to say that you’ve called and provide your request number.  The OFS Board can then follow up on behalf of the community, citing your many requests as evidence of both the scope of the problem and the strong support for resurfacing that exists among OFS residents.

This matter will be discussed further at Tuesday’s business meeting along with other important matters.  Please attend if you are able.
